A PDF file is essentially a container of pages plus metadata about fonts, images, and layout. Merging is not a "conversion", it's a lossless operation that copies pages from each source PDF into a single new container. Because no pages are re-rendered or re-compressed, the merged output has identical visual quality to the originals.

• Text stays selectable and searchable if the source PDFs had selectable text.
